Jack Frost

B&B

Wow I think that most of Victoria woke to a thick blanket of white frost this morning. I don't get very severe frosts here but the garden was iced over this morning and even the large pots in the kitchen garden with water lilies in them were frozen over. Coen even brought some ice inside as evidence that he was not seeing things. The tender new shoots on the potatoes are frozen solid and the strawberry leave would break if you scrunched them. There is no incentive to potter around in the garden this morning. A warm by the fire with a bowl of steaming thick porridge is a better way to go......or leftover bread and butter pudding!

BREAD AND BUTTER PUDDING
4 slices fruit bread, buttered
3 eggs
2 ½ cups milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 dessertspoons sugar
freshly grated nutmeg

Method
Cut the bread into quarters and arrange slices in a heatproof dish.
Whisk together the milk, eggs, sugar and vanilla and pour over the slices of bread.

Wait a few minutes for the liquid to be absorbed into the bread, top with freshly grated nutmeg.
Bake in a Bain marie for about 20 minutes in a moderate oven, the pudding will puff up when it is cooked.
Dredge with icing sugar and serve with pouring cream.

When I worked at Chez Suzy we made a Drunken Bread and Butter pudding. The pudding was made with Croissants and we soaked the dried fruit in whiskey, very yummy.
